How to live longer: A snack to lower risk of disease
One shining beacon is carrot juice.
Take cancer for starters.
Cancer develops when abnormal cells form and multiply uncontrollably.
Carrot juice is loaded with antioxidants and since antioxidants help stop cell damage, carrot juice may offer protection against various types of cancers.
In one study, carrot juice extract was used for 72 hours in the treatment of leukaemia cells and non-tumour control cells induced cell death and stopped the progression of the disease.
This suggests that carrots may contain effective bioactive chemicals for treating leukaemia, a cancer of the body’s blood-forming tissues.
Another study of younger men found that a diet rich in beta-carotene may offer protection against prostate cancer.
Heart benefits
Carrot juice is also an excellent source of potassium and this mineral can reduce your risk of heart disease.

How? Potassium helps to lower high blood pressure by countering the harmful effects of sodium, according to the American Heart Association (AHA).
Sodium raises your blood pressure but potassium helps to flush sodium out of your body.
“Potassium also helps to ease tension in your blood vessel walls, which helps further lower blood pressure,” adds the AHA.
High blood pressure is a precursor heart disease so it is reasonable to conclude that potassium-rich carrot juice will hinder this process.

Reducing dementia risk
Beta carotene, a red-orange pigment found in carrot juice, may also improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of age-related memory problems and dementia.
Oxidative stress, an unstable chemical reaction in your body, is linked to brain cell damage and occurs when brain and nerve cells can’t regenerate.
This weakens nerve signalling and reduces cognitive function.
However, beta-carotene in carrots may strengthen brain function and improve memory.
In one study, workers who were exposed to lead were treated with 10 milligrams of beta-carotene over a 12-week period.
The study found that after treatment, the group receiving beta-carotene had less oxidative stress.
General dietary tips

According to the NHS, you should combine a healthy diet with regular exercise to stave off the risk of long-term complications.
